Pick of the Pundits: Canford Cliffs edges it over Frankel

Published:

The Guardian’s Glorious Goodwood got off to an incredible start thanks to their 20/1 nap Arlequin in yesterday’s first race of the festival.

That puts them in great form at Goodwood and having napped Frankel in today’s Sussex Stakes they have more than a great chance of making it two from two.

Except their peers aren’t in agreement about Frankel and it comes as a bit of a shock to see his name mentioned just once in the Racing Post naps competition in what is being billed as the race of the season.

Even more incredible is that Frankel’s rival, Canford Cliffs, has been napped three times today and while the Sussex Stakes odds would suggest a gulf in class, the pundits know this race is a lot closer than the odds suggest.

Frankel is currently trading at 8/11 but it would be no surprise to see him go off at 4/6.

Canford Cliffs is currently available at 6/4 having opened at 11/8 this morning, but that may lengthen further if the solid support for Frankel keeps on coming – it’s very likely it will.

Garry Owen of the Daily Record, Newsboy of the Daily Mirror and Wise Owl of the Belfast Newsletter are prepared to stick their necks out and take on Frankel with Canford Cliffs.

Newsboy is on fire this month with his naps returning £13.31 for a £1 stake making him the second best tipster in the table on monthly form, and both he and Wise Owl napped winners at Goodwood yesterday in Strong Suit and Grey Command.

Garry Owen has been off form recently but he is one of the tipsters towards the top of the naps table that blows hot and cold and his opinion should be respected.

It’s surprising that Canford Cliffs takes more naps than Frankel today and that suggests the betting is out of sync, but at the weights it’s hard to oppose Frankel.
