Dalglish drops hint that there are more signings to arrive at Anfield

Liverpool’s pre-season has provided plenty of goals but unfortunately for Reds fans, their side has been on the receiving end of most of them.

It’s not wise to read too much into pre-season friendly results but having conceded three goals in all four ties, it’s clear that the Liverpool defence needs bolstering.

Kenny Dalglish has already splashed the cash in this transfer window by bringing in Jordan Henderson, Stuart Downing and Charlie Adam, but the Liverpool manager is keen to add defenders to the squad.

“Spending money does not guarantee you success,” said Dalglish. “(But) I don’t know of any football club that has ever had success that has not spent money. So it is necessary.

“But it’s even more important to spend it wisely. We’ve acted responsibly in the transfer market and we’ve also acted responsibly and respectfully with the owners, who have been fantastically supportive during the window.”

Jose Enrique’s Newcastle future is very much in doubt and Liverpool are keen to offer the full-back an exit route while Dalglish is also targeting either Gary Cahill or Scott Dann as he looks to strengthen his centre-backs.

Liverpool fans will be keen to see the promising Danny Wilson given some game time this season but in a defence that includes the ageing Jamie Carragher, Sotirios Kyriagos, Daniel Agger and the currently injured Martin Skrtel, it’s clear Dalglish needs some centre-backs.

Arsenal will be battling Liverpool for Cahill but Birmingham are yet to receive a bid for Dann and Dalglish is not afraid to splash the cash on young British talent.

With just under four weeks until the end of the transfer window Liverpool need to act fast to secure any new signings.

It could be a slow start to the season for Liverpool, especially as Gerrard and Skrtel are missing but there is plenty of optimism surrounding Anfield and a top four spot isn’t out of the equation.
