Liverpool already starting plans to sign the next Luis Suarez
Buying young Uruguayan talent is already set to pay dividends for Liverpool and if Damien Comolli has his way then many more players from the country will be arriving at Anfield in the future.
Luis Suarez has already made a big impact since arriving from Nacional via Ajax and there is every reason to believe that Sebastian Coates is also a star in the making following his summer arrival from the same Uruguayan club.
Liverpool were particularly impressed with Nacional’s efforts in helping Coates seal his switch to the Premier League and are keen to develop a firm relationship with the most successful club in Uruguay.
This would mean that Nacional would become a bit of a feeder club for Liverpool and having first option to sign a young rising Uruguay star could be a big help for Kenny Dalglish’s men in the coming years.
Some 14 of the 23 players in the Uruguay squad for this summer’s Copa America had either played for Nacional or risen through their ranks.
Meanwhile, Liverpool have also benefited from South American signings in the past, with both Lucas Leiva and Maxi Rodriguez being worthwhile members of their squad.
Comolli said: “I’ve got to thank the people from Nacional, the directors and their chairman, because they have been very helpful.
“We are talking about a partnership with them that we would like to create over the next three, four or five years, to see if there is more talent coming through.
“Maybe we can help them to develop their standards and in turn have the ability to bring those young players here.”
Suarez has already scored two Premier League goals this season and looks set to have a leading role to play in where they will eventually finish.
Liverpool’s odds are 14/1 to win the Premier League, while it is 4/7 that they finish anywhere in the top four, which would be a respectable achievement.
