McDermott emerges as favourite for Wolves vacancy

Brian McDermott may have never managed in the Premier League before, but this has not stopped him taking over as the new favourite at 6/4 to become the next manager of Wolves.

After sacking Mick McCarthy, Wolves chairman Jez Moxey indicated that the vacancy was not the role for a novice and that previous Premier League experience would be a useful CV attribute.

Therefore, it seems slightly controversial that the current Reading manager heads the Premier League odds to be appointed next permanent Wolves manager.

Reports suggest the two parties have already been in talks, even though McDermott has only been managing a club since being given the reins at Reading in January 2010.

However, his record has been relatively good since, with some impressive cup runs and victories over the likes of Liverpool and Everton and a spot in the Championship play-off final last season.

Meanwhile, he has a track record for helping clubs escape the drop, winning eight of his first 14 league games in charge of Reading in his first season and eventually guiding them to ninth in the table.

Furthermore, the likes of Stephen Hunt and Kevin Doyle are likely to put in a good word having previously been at Reading with McDermott.

With McDermott sure to jump at the chance of managing in the top flight, there is a strong possibility that he would accept if offered the job.

In terms of his rivals, Alan Curbishley was a heavy favourite initially to replace McCarthy, but his price has since lengthened substantially, while Neil Warnock has taken over at Leeds instead and the club have denied speaking to Gus Poyet.

Steve Bruce remains a candidate at 5/2 to take over, but if Wolves were keen on the former Sunderland boss there would have probably been discussions by now.
