McIlroy can exorcise Augusta demons to achieve Masters glory
Published:After appearing certain to claim a first Major in last year’s Masters, Rory McIlroy is eager to put his spectacular Augusta collapse behind him by triumphing this year at 5/1.
McIlroy proved his credentials only two months after last year’s tournament, by achieving his first Major success in the US Open in a show of unerring mental strength.
The Northern Irishman led in his quest to claim the Green Jacket for three days before an outrageous collapse saw him go round in 80 shots on the final day.
With renewed confidence this year, and bolstered by the knowledge he has proved himself capable of winning a Major, unlike fellow Brits Luke Donald and Lee Westwood who sandwich him in the world rankings, McIlroy could claim golf’s most prestigious title this weekend.
A rejuvenated Tiger Woods will contest this notion greatly though, after claiming his first PGA Tour success in two years last week at Bay Hill, and showing some semblance of his best form in doing so.
Woods is a 4/1 shot to land a fourth Masters title, and what would be his first triumph at the landmark Augusta tournament since 2005.
It has in fact been four years since the legendary American claimed any Major, and the 14-time victor looks to have his best chance in years of further closing in on Jack Nicklaus’ record haul of 18 Majors at Augusta this weekend.
Meanwhile, current world number one Luke Donald is a 14/1 chance to score that elusive Major success, whilst Lee Westwood is 16/1 to achieve the same feat.
Keegan Bradley represents a great each-way bet meanwhile, with the rookie of the year a 25/1 candidate for an Augusta victory, and Justin Rose also looks an interesting proposition at 33/1 to get amongst the places here as he did at the 2007 edition of the competition.
