Joshua to help British boxers enjoy record Olympic gold medal haul
Published:Great Britain look set for their most successful Olympics in terms of boxing gold medals for over 100 years in London and 7/2 appears a nice price that three athletes triumph in their respective weight classes.
Ten boxers make up the Britain team, which includes seven men and three women, with London representing the first time that female boxers are able to compete for a gold medal at the Olympics.
Britain’s most successful Olympics in terms of boxing in the last 100 years was easily 1956 in Melbourne, when they claimed five medals in total, which included two golds.
However, seven of the current crop are finalists in the World Championships, which suggests many could feature in the latter stages in London.
Light-welterweight hope Tom Stalker captains the team and brings strong credentials, including a victory at the Commonwealth Games and a third at last year’s World Champinships.
But it is Anthony Joshua, Luke Campbell and Savannah Marshall that perhaps have the best chances of winning gold.
Joshua will be the star name of the team as he fights at super heavyweight and took a silver medal at the last World Championships.
He beat Olympic champion Roberto Cammarelle in the early rounds and was then seemingly a victim of controversial scoring when narrowly losing the final.
Campbell is one of the more experienced members of the team and also took silver at the World Championships in the bantamweight division.
In the female ranks, Savannah Marshall took gold at middleweight in China and must be fancied to go well again.
Of the other competitors, Josh Taylor is a darkhorse in the lightweight category, while Nicola Adams can prevail at flyweight if she can beat Chinese champion Ren Can Can.
It is certainly not beyond the realms of possibility that Britain could be celebrating four boxing gold medallists at 10/1, while it is 8/1 that none of the ten entrants claim victory.
