Cavendish and Wiggins fancied in Olympic cycling betting
Published:Tour de France leader Bradley Wiggins’ summer is going exactly as planned so far – but it’s Mark Cavendish who could end up with more reasons to smile after the Olympics.
Wiggins held off main rivals Vincenzo Nibali and 2011 winner Cadel Evans to retain the yellow jersey after stage eight of the Tour de France and is currently the 5/6 favourite to still be wearing yellow in Paris on July 22.
That remains Wiggins’ major goal this season and being in the mix to win the most grueling of road races is hardly ideal preparation for an Olympic time trial – not that Wiggins will mind.
He is currently the 7/2 third favourite for the Olympic time trial, behind favourite Fabian Cancellara (6/5) and Tony Martin at 7/2. With the demands of the tour sure to take their toll, Wiggins may have to settle for a rather less illustrious medal in London.
If you do fancy a patriotic punt on the cycling though, then Cavendish is the man you should really be looking to.
The Manxman won the points classification at the Tour de France last year and followed that up by claiming Road World Championship.
He is currently 2/1 to win the Olympic road race and his form on this year’s Tour de France – he’s already won the third stage of the race – makes him a good to get his first Olympic gold medal.
He won’t have things all his own way though and Peter Sagan – current points classification leader in France – looks well worth consideration at 11/2 – especially considering how easy he made the Category1 La Planche des Belles Filles climb look yesterday.
If you’re looking for a slightly longer-odds punt though, then you could do a lot worse than back Edvald Boasson Hagen at 14/1.
Cavendish’s Team Sky teammate has shown consistently throughout his career that he is a top class rider and this may be the stage for him to grab some major glory for himself.
