Great Britain v Cameroon: Hosts to enjoy a straight-forward victory

Published:

Great Britain’s women’s football team are 1/6 to follow up their victory over New Zealand with another against Cameroon and, in doing so, almost certainly secure their spot in the quarter-finals.

The match takes place in Cardiff like their rather erratic opener. Their opponents started both halves more impressively only for Great Britain to then create (and waste) loads of chances before Steph Houghton scored a 64th-minute free kick.

That inability to make the most of their opportunities briefly threatened to haunt Hope Powell’s side when the Football Ferns forced two late openings, however New Zealand proved as imprecise in front of goal as the host nation.

Great Britain should benefit from even more possession in dangerous positions against Cameroon, who have never before competed at a World Cup or Olympic Games and saw that lack of experience ruthlessly exposed by Brazil on Wednesday.

The gold-medal hopefuls tore the newcomers apart 5-0, with global superstar Marta scoring twice, to creep in to 3/1 to take the prize and give Great Britain a taste of what they can expect in Group E’s final game at Wembley.

The combination of Cameroon’s lack of attacking thrust and Great Britain’s defensive strength – they shut out New Zealand and before that a formidable Sweden side in friendly action – points to the 14/1 outsiders scoring under 0.5 goals at 4/6.

Perhaps the best way to make money from this tie is to work out how many goals Powell’s women will score. The most they have netted so far is three in a warm-up against South Africa, who are level with Cameroon at 200/1 in the gold-medal market.

Great Britain’s women are 5/6 to score over 2.5 goals while odds of 5/1 are offered on them triumphing 3-0.
