Grabarz can add another gold to Olympic haul in high jump

With five men making the final who have cleared at least 2.35m this season, the Men’s High Jump final threatens to be a classic and Britain could be on the verge of another athletics gold medal in the shape of Robbie Grabarz.

Grabarz is 5/1 to win the event and was the only entrant to qualify for the final without a single failed attempt.

In fact, despite the quality of the field, only six athletes successfully confirmed their final spot by clearing 2.29m, with favoured Russian Aleksandr Shustov one of those to miss out.

Grabarz has increased his personal best to 2.36m this season from just 2.28m, while a success at the Diamond League meeting in Rome will prove that he can triumph at the major tournaments.

Even without Shustov, the Russians look the big dangers with their two-pronged attack of Ivan Ukhov and Andrey Silnov.

Ukhov has often been a massive jumper indoors, but struggled to translate this form outside.

This year is a little different after he cleared 2.39m at the Russian trials, although this form must be considered sketchy as Russian athletes tend to struggle to reproduce trials form at major meets.

He is a worthy favourite at 5/2, but given his outdoor record in the past, better value can be found elsewhere.

Silnov is the defending Olympic champion and cleared 2.37m at the trials.

He is 4/1 to win the high jump, with world champion Jesse Williams separating the two at 10/3, although he is lucky to even be in London after flopping in the US trials.

Qatar’s Mutaz Essa Barshim has been over 2.37m this season and if he can put his best foot forward, 16/1 must be a big price that he wins gold.
