Maria Sharapova favourite to get shot at Olympic gold

Published:

The women’s Olympic tennis reaches the semi final stage this Friday afternoon and there aren’t expected to be any upsets.

Reigning Wimbledon champion Serena Williams and former SW19 winner Maria Sharapova both take to the court and are expected to easily make it to the gold medal match…

Maria Sharapova v Maria Kirilenko

Maria Sharapova heads into her semi final clash as the big 2/9 favourite to see off fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko.

Sharapova was dominant in her straight sets victory over Kim Clijsters in their quarter final clash and looks worth a bet at 8/13 to win 2-0 in this last four meeting.

However, the pair have never met on grass before and Sharapova only leads 3-2 in their head-to-head meetings.

Sharapova also crashed out of Wimbledon in straight sets in the fourth round this year – despite being favourite for the championship – so, if you fancy a longer-odds punt, Kirilenko shouldn’t be completely discounted at 10/3.

Victoria Azarenka v Serena Williams

Wimbledon champion Serena Williams is the huge 2/9 favourite for this semi final against Victoria Azarenka and it’s hard to see the American being defeated.

Williams has won all of their previous grass court meetings in straight sets and has an 8-1 lead in their head-to-head meetings.

Backing Williams to win 2-0 at 8/13 looks like the best bet to take on in this match.
