Wigan v Everton: Toffees to come unstuck at the JJB

Published:

Wigan are settling into a familiar pattern in the Premier League of getting themselves up to their necks in relegation trouble, before pulling off an unlikely escape in the closing stages of the season.

Their loss at Sunderland last time out was their third on the spin in the league and they are still without a win at the JJB this term. This justifies the massive 11/4 that says they’ll beat Everton next up.

David Moyes’ side have started the season in uncharacteristic fashion and sit second in the table, no doubt suffering nosebleeds courtesy of such dizzy heights. Their good form will see many punters swarming around the 1/1 available for another Toffees win like a load of blokes around the slightly attractive receptionist at the office Christmas party.

Neither of these courses of action, however, are sensible ones to take. Wigan’s price is too large to resist for an established Premier League club playing at home, while Everton’s easier away fixtures have allowed them to sneak into the position they currently occupy.

They comprehensively beat Aston Villa and Swansea on the road, but played both at good times and, as impressive as they were in these clashes, trips to West Brom and Leeds exposed their true selves.

Both these lesser sides – Leeds being a middle of the road Championship club – comprehensively dispatched with Everton, who fielded close to full strength teams in both games.

One defeat in seven visits to the JJB will see them make the short journey from Merseyside in high spirits, but Wigan have the ability with the ball to hurt them making the 8/11 on offer for both teams to net a decent side bet. Alternatively, the 7/1 for Arouna Kone to complete the scoring has potential for windfall as both of his previous Wigan goals have been the last of the game.
