Heineken Cup accumulator: Clermont to win at Leinster boosts selections

Published:

When selecting sides for a Heineken Cup accumulator it is all too easy to side with the home team more often than not.

But with the aim of adding value to our multiple, we have chosen three away victors to nestle in with five conquerors and serve up a tasty looking acca that offers a potential return of odds over 18/1.

Pool 5 leaders Clermont Auvergne are the longest choice at 2/1 to win away at back-to-back Heineken Cup champions Leinster. This may look like madness, but the visitors are five points clear from the Irish side in the table, having edged them in the reverse fixture last weekend in France.

This match looks like being a game to savour, and it could go either way so close are the two sides. They both sit third in their respective domestic leagues, but Clermont’s form in Europe has been stronger so they get the nod for this clash.

The next away backer in the selection is Toulouse, who are available at 4/11 to beat the Ospreys in Swansea. The French champions are top of Pool 2 having overcome all three of their European adversaries so far this term.

Kiwi Luke McAlister is a key man for the French side, having joined from Sale Sharks in 2011 and his eye for goal can help the visitors grab victory from their trip to Wales.

The third away pick is admittedly a favourite in Leicester Tigers, who should defeat Italian outfit Treviso at odds of 1/6. The hosts have yet to pick up a point in the pool while the English team have notched 10.

In another mouth-watering match-up this weekend, Saracens look a good price at 1/2 to pip Munster at Vicarage Road. It’s brave to back against the Red Army, but the two sides are level at the top of Pool 1 and home advantage should be enough for the second-place side in the Aviva Premiership to come out on top.

A word also for English champions Harlequins, who sneak into our accumulator with an unbelievably short odds-on of 1/500. The heaviest favourites over a weekend of Heineken Cup action, the Stoop is fully expecting all the points against Parma-based Zebre.
