Broner ahead of Mayweather to be five-weight boxing champ

Adrien Broner is undoubtedly the star attraction in the lightweight boxing division and even though he has only had two fights in the weight class, calls are already in place to step up again.

Broner started slowly in his WBC defence against Gavin Rees, but was soon on top and went on to claim a 26th career victory against Gavin Rees, a 22nd by knockout.

He is almost guaranteed to stay at lightweight for one more fight to face the winner of the upcoming bout between Ricky Burns and Miguel Vazquez, but from there, options look thin.

Although he is a more attacking boxer, Broner is widely compared to Floyd Mayweather because of both his style in the ring and put downs outside of it.

And it should be noted that Broner is currently ahead of where Mayweather was at the same age and a similar stage of his career.

Mayweather is now a five-weight world champion, but back when he was 23, he had only won 23 fights and become a world champion at a single weight.

Floyd was 27 before he was in the right condition to move up to light-welterweight, which is the division where the majority of the boxing community want Broner to be fast-tracked into.

Granted, there are more lucrative showdowns waiting if he jumps from 135lb to 140lb, most notably, Amir Khan, Danny Garcia or Lucas Matthysse, but there is no rush.

Broner is 7/1 to emulate Mayweather and become a world champion in five different weight classes, which is an outstanding price if he fills his potential, with the only issue being that punters may have to wait a while to get paid out.

Alternatively, it is 20/1 that Broner surpasses Mayweather and wins world titles in six weight classes, something which has currently only been achieved by Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao.
