Kompany injury could give Liverpool big chance against City
Published:Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany will miss his side‘s midweek Premier League game against Queens Park Rangers – but that’s the least of their worries.
Kompany came off the pitch in the 40th minute of City’s 1-0 FA Cup victory over Stoke City on Saturday with a calf injury that will see him miss Tuesday’s clash with with the west London strugglers.
Man City assistant manager, David Platt, said: “I think we’ll lose Vincent Kompany for a little while. It’s too early to say how long he will be out but he has a slight pull on his calf and will miss the midweek game.
“We will have to assess the injury over the next 24 hours to get a better picture but he won’t play against QPR.”
City are the big 4/9 favourites to win that game at Loftus Road and, even with Kompany missing, it’s hard to see Harry Redknapp’s men getting anything out of the visit of the champions.
However, Kompany has suffered in the past with calf injuries and, if it is worse than first suspected, then there is every chance he could miss City’s weekend match with a steadily improving Liverpool – and that would be a blow.
Liverpool have a very decent record against the Citizens in recent games and have not lost against Roberto Mancini’s men in their last three meetings.
With the Reds adding the impressive Daniel Sturridge to their ranks in January, Brendan Rodgers’ men are starting to make big strides forward and they could be poised to take advantage if Kompany misses out.
City will head into the match as rightful favourites but, if Kompany does miss the match, a cheeky punt on Liverpool may end up paying out a tidy sum.
