The Price is Wrong: Don’t back Sunderland for top North East club

Published:

With two points currently separating Newcastle from Sunderland in the Premier League standings, it is obvious that the Black Cats have to win at Tottenham on the final day to have any chance of overhauling their North East neighbours.

Not only must Sunderland win, but the Newcastle result must also go in their favour. If Newcastle beat Arsenal, they will obviously finish above their rivals regardless.

Therefore, with Sunderland 9/1 in the Premier League betting to win at White Hart Lane, it would make sense that the price on them ending the campaign as the top North East club would be larger as two things must happen for this to occur.

The shoot-out to be top North East club has Newcastle understandably as the 1/14 favourites, especially as Sunderland have lost on the final day in all of their four seasons since returning to the Premier League.

However, Sunderland are quoted at just 6/1, which is at least half the price it arguably should be.

The other main reason as to why Sunderland should be avoided to be top North East club is simply because they look to have their work cut out in beating Tottenham.

While Sunderland theoretically have nothing to play for now that their Premier League status is preserved for at least another season, Spurs are the complete opposite.

They absolutely have to win if they harbour any hopes of catching Arsenal in the race for the final top-four vacancy and are unbeaten in five with Sunderland.

Furthermore, Sunderland have only triumphed once on their 11 Premier League visits to White Hart Lane, leaving empty handed on nine of these occasions.
