Man Utd, Liverpool and Arsenal creating a late 80s revival
Published:Many trends and fashions in the world enjoy cycles of success and decline, falling from being extremely in-style, to a spell in the doldrums, to a revival taking them to the height of popularity again.
The boy band Take That, the Mini Cooper and Dr Marten boots are all reasonable examples and another revival is currently taking place in the football world, with a look at the Premier League table potentially causing some supporters to wonder whether they have taken a time machine back to the late 1980s.
After all, there were a large number of homeowners currently in negative equity then, while the Conservatives were also in power.
These same things are still visible now, while in England’s top division, Arsenal and Liverpool are at the forefront of the title race and there are some concerns over a Scottish manager at Manchester United.
Looking particularly at the 1988/89 season, Arsenal ended up winning the title on goal difference by beating Liverpool at Anfield on the final day of the season, while Man Utd were floundering somewhat in 11th spot.
The way the current campaign has started, it is not completely unfeasible that the final standings in May will have a similar look to it.
Man Utd have already lost half of their opening six games to sit down in 12th in the Premier League table, but still being outside of the top 10 at the end of the campaign is about as likely as a Timmy Mallett 2014 renaissance.
However, it is looking far less certain that they will finish among the Champions League places and it is 11/5 that Manchester United end up outside of the top four.
Arsenal are 7/2 to win the Premier League this season, while West Ham are 10/3 to be relegated, which is what happened to them in the aforementioned 1988/89 campaign.
