Moyes era starts for real with Man Utd to break club transfer record

| 02.09.2013

Aside from Ashley Young’s bad crossing and proof that Ryan Giggs is not a conventional winger in the sense that being left-footed means he should start from the right, the one thing that Manchester United’s defeat at Liverpool showed was a weakness in central midfield.

Not only did they lack creativity, but they lack some physicality, aggression and players to move the ball on a little quicker.

Some regular games from Shinji Kagawa would help, but it is the growing likelihood that both Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini will join, which should fill these voids.

With Athletic Bilbao in no rush to sell, Man Utd have finally given in and agreed to pay the Spaniard’s minimum fee release clause of €36m to land their man.

Herrera’s movement would make him highly valuable, while although not particularly pacey, he attempted over 100 dribbles for Bilbao last season. Furthermore, he is a keen tackler and an accurate passer.

Moyes has stuck to a two-man centre midfield in his opening games in charge, but Herrera looks more adept in a three-man unit and Man Utd will surely switch to this approach if Fellaini also arrives to bring in the needed muscle.

The speculation is that Herrera will sign a five-year deal, with a large chunk of the money needing to be put forward up front.

The latest prices show Fellaini at 1/5 to join Man Utd by the end of the window and if the duo arrive, it would help ensure their biggest summer spending spree in seven years.
