Zulte-Waregem v Wigan: Expect goals as Latics head to Belgium

Published:

Goals look set be the order of business as Wigan make their first foray into European competition this week.

The Latics will make their continental debut against Zulte-Waregem and while Owen Coyle’s men have got off to an indifferent start domestically, Wigan fans cannot claim to have been bored this season.

Both teams have scored in three of the Latics’ last four games, while four of their six matches in the league this term have seen over 2.5 goals.

Waregem have been equally exciting – for neutral fans at least – in recent weeks, with their last two games producing no fewer than 14 goals.

The Belgians – who landed in the Europa League after a 5-0 Champions League qualifier humbling at the hands of PSV – have seen more than 2.5 goals in each of their last three outings, while both teams have netted in six of their last seven fixtures.

With goals flying in at both ends for these sides the over 2.5 goals and both teams to score markets certainly appeal at 21/20 and 4/5 respectively.

As very little separates these sides in the win-draw-win markets – Wigan are 6/4 favourites but just edge out the hosts at 11/8 – more attention should be paid to the goalscorer markets offered by Ladbrokes.

Chelsea’s Thorgan – younger brother of Eden – Hazard has been proving a top talent in his own right during his loan spell in Belgium, scoring in six of his eight appearances this term and weighing in with seven assists.

The Belgian can be backed at 7/1 to open the scoring and at the same odds to net the last goal of the game – something he has done twice already this year.

With Wigan likely to be without the injured Grant Holt once again, Jordi Gomez could attract a lot of attention among Latics fans.

The Spaniard has rounded off the scoring in the Latics’ last two outings and is priced at 10/1 to do the same against Essevee.
