Coleman attracting interest for vacant Crystal Palace post

Current Wales manager and former Crystal Palace defender Chris Coleman has seen his odds slashed to become the next permanent boss at Selhurst Park, though Tony Pulis remains the favourite with Ladbrokes.

Reports doing the rounds that the Welsh FA will not be extending Coleman’s current contract as national team boss – which runs out in November – have seen punters rush in to back the former Palace player to succeed Ian Holloway, with his odds now at 9/4.

Coleman’s compatriot remains the 1/1 favourite to given the job ahead of him, though some recent reports have alluded to Pulis’ wage demands creating a stumbling block between the manager and Palace chairman Steve Parish.

Parish has already publicly stated that he wishes for Holloway’s replacement to be someone with Premier League experience on their CV, but it’s also no secret that the south London club are not in a position to pay top whack either.

This makes Coleman an intriguing prospect, because he certainly fits the bill in terms of top-flight experience, after taking charge of Fulham for a four-year spell, where he guided the Cottagers to a ninth-place finish in his first full season.

Nonetheless, a disappointing qualifying campaign in charge of Wales after other underwhelming stints at Coventry and a nightmare at Real Sociedad have tarnished his reputation somewhat.

If his wages are considerably lower than former Stoke manager Pulis, his links with the Eagles as a player during a relatively successful five-year period for the club during the mid 90s, do give him an extra edge.

Meanwhile, the notion of Parish opting for a young manager with a more experienced director of football alongside them, has also appeared in some other reports, giving credence to someone of Karl Robinson’s ilk at 33/1.
