Ignore Bridget as ‘Pies and Puds’ will top Christmas book list
Published:The latest instalment of Bridget Jones’ Diary is the strong favourite to keep the tills ringing fastest in the run up to Christmas and top the official top 50 book chart. However, Brits have shown more interest in their tummies than tear-jerkers when buying literary gifts in recent years.
Ladbrokes have bestowed a price of 4/6 on Helen Fielding’s hotly anticipated latest offering in the author’s best-selling saga of Bridget Jones novels, Mad About the Boy, to top the last official UK book chart before December 25th.
However, despite the huge popularity of one of British literature’s most loveable characters of the last 20 years, there are a few good reasons to look beyond Fielding’s latest novel.
The main one being Britain’s love affair with the ‘celebrity chef’ in the advent of a flood of televised cooking programmes over the past five or six years, although a release date slightly closer to Christmas would also have done old Bridget’s chances no harm.
Although he’s not on the current list of hopefuls after releasing Save with Jamie in September (already slipped to #4), Jamie Oliver cookbooks would have landed this bet in the last two years.
And this brings into the frame a host of books on the list at far more attractive odds of 25/1, such as A Lighter Way To Bake (Lorraine Pascal), Pies and Puds (Paul Hollywood) and Lizzie Kamenetsky’s, Great British Bake Off Winter Kitchen.
All three of these books will be released off the back of popular TV series, though out of that trio, there is only one that has truly captured the nation’s attention.
Now with his own slot on the equally as primetime ‘Saturday Morning Kitchen’ the star of the BBC’s Great British Bake-Off, Paul Hollywood, is the country’s newest culinary star, with a surname to match.
Hollywood’s book Pies and Puds seems sure to sell faster than his own most refined of hotcakes, while out of the plethora of autobiographies, Sir Alex Ferguson’s at 14/1 has to be the pick.
