Mackay still odds-on, despite agent comments on his future
Published:Malky Mackay’s agent may have told BBC Radio Wales that the Cardiff manager has no plans to step down from his role, but he remains a heavy favourite to be the next Premier League boss to leave their post.
Mackay’s odds have drastically fallen in the past week to the current price of 10/11 following the news that changes have been made to his backroom team.
Head of recruitment Iain Moody has been replaced, despite reportedly playing a pivotal role in luring many of the club’s ambitious summer signings to Wales.
It is owner Vincent Tan that is thought to have made this decision and another to replace Moody with Alisher Apsalyamov, a 23-year-old Kakazhstani with no prior experience of football, who is a friend of Tan’s son.
This isn’t the first example of Tan riling staff and supporters, as he previously decided to change the club’s kit from blue to red because he regarded it as a luckier colour and then frustrated players in a debate over end-of-season bonuses.
It cannot be denied that Tan’s financial contribution has had a large impact on Cardiff reaching the Premier League, but things tend to go downhill when owners decide to interfere in the football side of a club.
A board meeting is set to take place in the coming days, where it is believed that Mackay will seek assurances over the club’s future plans.
Should Mackay decide to stay at Cardiff, 7/2 will look a big price on Martin Jol being the next Premier League manager to leave their post, as he is far from out of the Fulham woods, despite beating Stoke last time.
They are still only out of the bottom three on goal difference, with a massive game away at Crystal Palace up next. Fulham are marginal favourites at 6/4 to win at Crystal Palace.
