Spurs better bet than Man United to be best away team

Adnan Januzaj rescued a win for Manchester United away at rock-bottom Sunderland in their last game, but there are clearly still problems at Old Trafford, with David Moyes’ side sitting ninth in the Premier League.

David Moyes has steered his team to two wins and two losses in their four away games, making United’s odds of 13/5 to have the best away record in the league far too short.

Losses at Liverpool and Manchester City are not complete aberrations, but the manner in which United lost – especially at the Etihad – along with their poor home form has taken away the air of invincibility so carefully cultivated by Sir Alex Ferguson.

They currently have the seventh best away record in the league and half the teams ahead of them have played fewer matches.

One of those sides is Tottenham Hotspur, who have made a steady start to the campaign despite being thrashed 3-0 at home by West Ham in their last game.

Andre Villas-Boas’ side have won away at Cardiff and Crystal Palace and lost at Arsenal in their three away games, hardly a record to write to home about but one that builds on their fine form on the road last season.

Only Manchester United won more away games than Spurs last year, when they picked up 34 points including the three they took from Old Trafford.

Traditionally not the best away team, the counter-attacking style Villas-Boas has put in place is well-suited to trips away from White Hart Lane, and they are good value at 8/1 to have the best record this campaign.

Arsenal are 9/4 favourites to be the best away side after the 1-1 draw at West Brom ended a run of eight straight wins on their travels.

However, that run did not include a trip to any of last season’s top seven. In six trips to those sides last year Arsenal lost three and picked up just five points, meaning their odds can also be viewed as a trifle short.
