Masters success pinpoints the fine value in Taylor’s World C’ship price
Published:Phil Taylor’s stunning 10-1 demolition of Adrian Lewis in the final of the Masters is the only evidence prospective punters require before deciding where to place their Ladbrokes World Championship stakes.
At 6/4, the Power offers incredible value for money ahead of darts’ showpiece event, with only really one individual capable of stopping him.
Michael van Gerwen is that man and a repeat of the pair’s 2012 final date could well be on the cards. There’ll be plenty of takers on the Dutchman’s 11/4 for success, but the trophy is Taylor’s to lose and his generous price should be snapped up prior to his inevitable victory at the forthcoming Grand Slam dilutes it.
The 16-time world champion is available at 5/4 to claim a fifth Grand Slam crown in what will be just the seventh instalment of the event and, again, this is a price that shouldn’t be ignored.
The Masters triumph emphasised the monster gulf between Taylor’s tungsten-tossing ability and that of just about every other individual in the dartisphere.
Taylor’s 10-1 win in the final was, in fact, his second of the tournament, after dismantling James Wade by the same scoreline in the semis. This battering, when contrasted with the 10-9 slugfest Lewis played out with Raymond van Barneveld in the other semi, depicts the ease in which the Power can brush aside the rest, while they all scrabble around for the runner-up cheque.
Aside from the immense discrepancy in quality between Taylor and the rest, there’s also a little historical factor to consider.
Never, in the Power’s glittering darting career has he won a stand alone world crown; they’ve always come in pairs at least.
Having won the title last year, his record in the competition suggests he’s on to savour another helping of Ally Pally glory this term.
