Southampton v Hull: Saints to go marching on

Published:

Southampton’s combination of free-flowing football and supreme organisation has rightly earned them plaudits as well as points this season.

And when Hull City visit the south coast expect the travel-sick Tigers to become the latest side to be smothered by the Saints’ energetic pressing style and stifled by a steadfast defence.

The hosts are 4/7 to win the match and 27/20 to win to nil with plenty of evidence to suggest they’ll penetrate their opponents while keeping another clean sheet.

It’s an oft-used cliché but there’s some truth in the notion that newly-promoted teams often struggle away from home.

Since their ascension to the Premier League this term, Hull have offered little to disprove that theory.

The east Yorkshire club have lost four of their five games on the road while failing to score in three of those matches.

The news that forward Sone Aluko will be out for up to 10 weeks with an Achilles injury has only further depleted already limited attacking options.

But those who’ve been impressed by Hull’s otherwise spirited start to the campaign can find value in the 11/2 on offer for them to triumph with the Tigers 13/5 to go home with a point.

Meanwhile, Southampton come into this encounter off the back of three consecutive 2-0 victories and their attacking line-up is likely to have too much firepower for a defence that’s been breached nine times away from the KC Stadium.

The home side’s attacking prowess hasn’t gone unnoticed with boss Mauricio Pochettino earning the Manager of the Month award and young talent Jay Rodriguez recently earning a call-up to the England squad following some fine performances.

Three goals in his last four Premier League games caught the eye of Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson and the 24-year-old striker can be backed at odds of 13/8 to score at any time against Hull.

Teammate Adam Lallana has also been given the opportunity to feature for England in their upcoming friendlies against Chile and Germany.

The midfielder has notched two goals in Southampton’s last four matches in the league and opened the scoring when his side recently saw off Swansea at home.

He can be backed at 7/1 to repeat the trick with odds of 11/5 to register on the scoresheet at any point in the game.

Saints striker Rickie Lambert completes the trio of south coast stars who’ll be on international duty and if Pablo Daniel Osvaldo fails to recover in time from a nerve injury then Lambert may well feature from the start with the 31-year-old hitman 7/2 to open the scoring.
