‘Perfect’ oppo picked for Arsenal and Man City in Champions League

Published:

As Arsenal and Manchester City find themselves on the wrong side of the tracks as far as the Champions League draw is concerned, we have put forward our own suggestions as to which European powerhouses might best be knocked down by the Premier League representatives.

Do you agree with our versions of a ‘best-case scenario’ for the two sides?

Arsenal (20/1) v Paris St Germain (12/1)

Admittedly, the Gunners’ list of possible opponents is more nightmare-inducing than a Stephen King novel just before bed, but a draw against PSG would arguably enable the best night’s kip for Arsene Wenger.

Not least because it would mean the Premier League leaders will have swerved Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

But more so, because Laurent Blanc’s side have shown some fragility recently by losing 2-0 to lowly Evian in Ligue 1 and they dropped points against Anderlecht and then lost to Benfica in Group C.

Despite having a squad which contains Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Edinson Cavani, there is also a general consensus that the strength of French football is at an all-time low.

Manchester City (14/1) v Borussia Dortmund (12/1)

To pit Manuel Pellegrini’s side against last season’s beaten finalists may appear a little foolhardy at first, but again, it’s frying pan and fire stuff for City…..

….however, we have now all witnessed that incredible comeback win over holders Bayern Munich on German shores, which will have acted as an intravenous injection of confidence.

But the theory is not based solely on that magnificent win in Munich, City already have a measure of what they are up against, having faced Jurgen Klopp’s outfit during the group stages last season.

They may have drawn and lost then, but Arsenal have already torn down their air of invincibility by winning at the Westfalenstadion during this campaign.
