The Colombian outscoring Falcao and Martinez Arsenal must buy
Published:A daily scroll through the endless reams of transfer rumours that surface during this January’s transfer window will see a couple of Colombian strikers linked regularly to the Premier League.
Monaco’s Radamel Falcao, who has nine goals in Ligue 1 this season, and Porto’s Jackson Martinez are among some of the most hyped players in world football at the moment, so constant links between them and the country’s elite football clubs are natural.
Chelsea are thought to be keen on bringing Falcao to London, with his precocious scoring talent and eligibility to play in the Champions League enough of an attraction for the Blues to shell out £50m or more for.
The one club who desperately need a striker, though, is Arsenal. Nicklas Bendtner and Theo Walcott are both injured and Olivier Giroud must be getting tired of playing every single game up front on his own.
Backup is a major requirement if Arsene Wenger’s side are going to make good on their threats to be this season’s Premier League champions, an achievement Ladbrokes rate as a 4/1 possibility.
Martinez, who has scored 12 times for Porto in the Portuguese Liga Sagres this season, is thought to be somewhere near the top of Arsene Wenger’s wishlist but we’ve uncovered a compatriot who would be far more worthwhile.
Fredy Montero, who plays for Porto’s fierce rivals Sporting, is outscoring both of his country mates with 13 league strikes so far and an impressive 16 in 18 appearances in all competitions.
The 26-year-old, who is valued at a bargain £5m, is on loan in Portugal from MLS outfit Seattle Sounders where he broke the club’s scoring record with 60 goals in his four seasons in America.
He was loaned to Sporting at the start of this season with an option to buy, but the lure of the Premier League’s upper echelons is likely to be a far more lucrative alternative for the four-capped international.
