Back Bury, Portsmouth and Southend to bounce back into form

Published:

It perhaps shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that English football’s bruising fourth tier is awash with inconsistency.

Bury, Portsmouth and Southend are just three of the teams currently toiling in a division where the gap between promotion hopefuls Newport County, who lie in eighth position, and the drop zone is just 10 points.

And with many of the sides in the league cancelling each other out, it can be difficult to spot where the betting value lies.

But thankfully, our news team have come up with this enticing 5/1 treble with victories for the aforementioned trio returning £61.33 from a £10 stake.

Bury to beat Bristol Rovers @11/10

The hosts have a fantastic chance to drag Bristol Rovers back into the relegation mire and in doing so collect a third win from their last five matches at Gigg Lane.

Successive postponements should ensure David Flitcroft’s Shakers enter this contest well-refreshed as they bid to beat a Rovers side who are winless in their previous seven games on the road, losing four of those fixtures.

That poor form on their travels is unlikely to be reversed here with Bury set to extend their unbeaten run to eight games.

Portsmouth to beat AFC Wimbledon @6/5

Visiting Wimbledon have had any play-off ambitions they might have harboured checked in recent weeks, suffering consecutive defeats to Oxford and Rochdale respectively. And they won’t find any charity at Fratton Park.

Although the Dons ran out convincing 4-0 winners in the reverse fixture a trip to the south-coast will prove a different proposition for a side who have picked up just three wins in 14 games away from home this season.

Pompey’s new strike partnership of Ryan Taylor and Jake Jervis have scored five goals between them in as many of the club’s previous matches and their youthful exuberance should cause problems for Neal Ardley’s Londoners.

Portsmouth boss Ritchie Barker has helped oversee a six-game unbeaten stretch, albeit four of those matches have been drawn. But the chance to claim a vital three points is unlikely to be missed.

Southend to beat Exeter @ 5/6

Phil Brown’s Southend were charging up the League Two table at the turn of the year, however their momentum has recently stalled meaning victory over a similarly patchy Exeter is a must at Roots Hall.

The Shrimpers’ Essex home has been a happy hunting ground so far this season, with only one defeat in their last 10 played on their own turf.

Exeter have actually fared better on their travels this term but with only one win in their last nine, victory over lowly Torquay, the Grecians have found themselves stuck in mid-table and looking over their shoulder.

A lack of goals in recent weeks hasn’t helped their cause. Just four strikes in their previous six fixtures is uninspiring with Paul Tisdale’s outfit looking to avoid a repeat of the 2-0 loss inflicted upon them by Southend back in November.
