History-making snowboarder sets Team GB on their way at Sochi
Published:Winter Olympic fever can begin in earnest for everyone in Great Britain as snowboarder Jenny Jones set emotions flowing on day two of the games.
Competing in the jaw-dropping Slopestyle competition one day after Jamie Nicholls and Billy Morgan set tongues wagging in the men’s version, Jones put together a glorious run in the final that placed her in top spot.
With 12 riders still to perform, a nervous wait was in store but the 33-year-old Bristolian was able to watch with growing glee as competitor after competitor failed to knock her out of the top three.
Jones ended up with a bronze medal, the first the country has ever claimed in a snow event, as American Jaime Anderson and Fin Enni Rukajarvi took gold and silver respectively.
As a result, Ladbrokes have gone 1/2 that at least one member of Team GB returns home with a gold in any sport, while it’s 6/4 that we are the denied the chance to celebrate an event win.
The best hope of a gold looks to be the two curling teams, where our women are priced at 2/5 to win a medal of any kind and 5/2 for a gold, while the men are rated as 4/5 for a podium and 11/2 for gold.
Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: “Jones has got Team GB off the mark and the odds now suggest at least one gold is in sight. We’ve got every right to be hopeful of our Curling teams adding to that tally but that looks about it after that.”
The firm don’t expect Jones to open a medal floodgate though, as they go 2/5 that the total medal haul tallies five or less, but the wave of optimism Jones has created with her performance is sure to tempt a few bets to the contrary.
