Iturbe’s starring role in Verona grabs Liverpool’s attention

| 15.03.2014

Liverpool’s search for a new winger has led them to Verona’s on-loan Argentine, Juan Iturbe, though the English club are likely to face stiff competition from Serie A’s top brass for his signature.

Roma, Juventus and Inter are all supposedly keeping tabs on the young trickster whose dazzling displays have caught the eye of the Serie A establishment.

Iturbe is actually a Porto player, but the 20-year-old was loaned out to Serie A side Verona at the beginning of the campaign where he has since excelled.

Verona were freshly promoted from Serie B at the start of the 2013/14 season and Iturbe has helped the relative minnows into contention for the Europa League spots in the Italian top flight, where they currently reside in seventh.

However, for a club far more used to residing in the second-tier, this mammoth overachievement has not gone unnoticed either in Italy or across the continent where Liverpool are thought to be circling.

It’s well documented that the Reds – who are the narrow 9/5 outsiders to do the Premier League double over arch rivals Manchester United next – missed out on both their principle targets this season, both wingers.

Chelsea snaffled Mohamed Salah from under their noses, before Dnipro pulled the shutters down on a potential £16m deal for Yevhen Konoplyanka, who has now emerged as a target for Paris St-Germain.

Iturbe could follow in the footsteps of fellow Argentines Javier Mascherano and Maxi Rodriguez if he were to move to Anfield, while the success of fellow South Americans Lucas, Philippe Coutinho and Luis Suarez is sure to be a lure.

Well known in Italy for his dribbling skills and tenacity in the tackle for Verona this season, Iturbe has also chipped in with five goals in Serie A this season.
