Khan back in action against former Hatton opponent

Amir Khan will finally step back into the ring for his first test in the welterweight division against former WBA World Champion Luis Colazo in Las Vegas on May 3rd.

After failing to secure a bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr, ‘King Khan’ will now fight on the undercard of the best pound-for-pound fighter’s clash with Marcos Maidana at the MGM Grand.

The 27-year-old is still harbouring hopes of a much anticipated fight with Money Mayweather but the Bolton fighter insists his main focus is on beating Collazo.

“The fight with Mayweather will happen in the future, but I’m just going to concentrate on one style which is Collazo’s,” said Khan.

“I’ll probably be at ringside for Mayweather’s fight against Maidana and will call him out again in the press conference so we’ll have to see what happens.”

But first Khan will have to be fully prepared for his Collazo test with the former world champion on a four-fight winning streak, including an impressive win over the former WBC champion Victor Ortiz last time out.

The 32-year-old was also Ricky Hatton’s first test in the 147lbs division eight years ago and many pundits claimed he should have beat one of Britain’s favourite fighting sons that night.

The fight will act as chief support as Mayweather goes in search of a 46th straight win against WBA welterweight champion Maidana, who was beaten by Khan earlier in his career.

The unbeaten American, who Khan accused of taking the easy option in fighting Maidana, is the comprehensive favourite for victory in Las Vegas at odds of 1/12, while his Argentinean opponent is a huge underdog at 7/1 with the bookie.
