Three potential Arsenal targets now Mandzukic is off the menu

| 15.04.2014

If the latest news about Arsenal’s hunt for a new striker is to be believed, the north London club are tailoring their search around a mobile big-man. It just won’t be Mario Mandzukic.

Bayern Munich’s sporting director, Matthias Sammer, has warned the Gunners, and everyone else for that matter, off a pursuit for the Croat, who leads the club’s Bundesliga scoring charts with 17.

If Arsenal manage to book another European tour next season, at 8/11, they’ll need someone to share the considerable workload heaped on Olivier Giroud’s shoulders this term. Here’s three players the north London club could turn their attention to:

Edin Dzeko – Manchester City

Despite making just 18 Premier League starts this season, City’s perennial substitute has still found the net 11 times.

It’s thought this season will be his last at the Etihad as he seeks to play first fiddle somewhere else, as opposed to third with the Citizens.

That would certainly be the case at Arsenal, where Giroud has managed just two more strikes from 31 starts.

Andre-Pierre Gignac – Marseille

The 28-year-old has enjoyed a return to consistency over the past two seasons with Marseille, after registering just one goal in 21 league games during the 2011/12 season.

With 14 goals to his name this term backing up the 13 he accumulated in the last campaign, Gignac would certainly play understudy to Giroud should he switch to north London, but has far more experience than current deputy Yaya Sanogo.

Stefan Kiessling – Bayer Leverkusen

At 30-years-old, the German would be a move away from the usual youth-first policy the Gunners employ in transfer windows.

But having scored well into double figures in five of his last six Bundesliga seasons, Kiessling would certainly bring a revered scoring pedigree to the Emirates.

Sami Hyypia’s recent sacking throws his future into doubt too.
