League Two Acca: Portsmouth plum pick to beat Newport

| 29.08.2014

There may be a few surprise names currently residing at the top of the League Two table (we’re looking at you, Morecambe) but we think there’s an air of predictability about a few of the upcoming fixtures.

That might sound like we’re just making a few sweeping generalisations but rest assured, as always, there’s plenty of methodical thinking behind our selections.

Portsmouth, Bury, Cambridge and Northampton make up this week’s tasty fourfold with £114.49 on offer from just a £10 stake with Ladbrokes.

Portsmouth to beat Newport @ 3/4

Andy Awford’s Portsmouth are living up to their billing as one of the pre-season favourites and are unlikely to be troubled by visiting Newport at Fratton Park.

Justin Edinburgh’s struggling outfit picked up their first point of the season with a creditable draw against Burton but that mini-upturn in fortunes will be short-lived.

With just one win in their last 13 on their travels in League Two the Welsh side represent little threat here.

Bury to beat Accrington @ 8/13

Bury have won both of their previous meetings at home to Accrington 3-0 and it would be no surprise to see a similar scoreline on this occasion.

Stanley are once again enduring a torrid start to the campaign with a trip to Gigg Lane a tough assignment that probably won’t bring James Beattie’s men any joy.

The Shakers have lost only one of their previous 17 matches on home turf and are a solid bet this Saturday.

Cambridge to beat Carlisle @ 5/4

Expect the pressure to mount on Carlisle boss Graham Kavanagh after his side leave the Abbey Stadium with nothing to show for their efforts.

It’s been a difficult re-introduction to the basement division for the Cumbrians having picked up just two points from their opening four games.

Meanwhile, Cambridge’s two defeats have been to high-flying Morecambe and Pompey respectively and they can get back on track to extend the visitors’ winless away record in the league to 11 games.

Northampton to beat Exeter @ 4/5

Northampton look a far more solid side compared to the one that only just beat the drop on the final day of last season.

On the other hand, Exeter are in freefall and will struggle to survive this term if their current woes continue.

Paul Tisdale’s Grecians have scored just two goals in their five outings in all competitions so far, losing three of those contests.
