How signing Man Utd man could help Spurs get Schneiderlin
Published:Despite a highly-encouraging start to the season, there are still plenty of rumours flying around Tottenham Hotspur as the transfer window draws to a close.
Mauricio Pochettino is still apparently in the market for a forward and a midfielder, with former Southampton charge Morgan Schneiderlin his number one target for the latter position.
The Saints have proved unwilling to do business over the Frenchman though, with Spurs arriving at the St Mary’s firesale after Liverpool and Manchester United had already ransacked the shelves.
However, in a slightly roundabout way, the Lilywhites could slay their two remaining transfer birds with one stone if they secure Danny Welbeck on loan from the Red Devils.
The England international is keen to leave Old Trafford, at least temporarily due to a likely lack of action this season, and Spurs are reportedly duking it out with rivals Arsenal for his services.
Welbeck’s goal record is not outstanding, but it is worth noting that he averaged 0.55 goals-per-90 minutes in the Premier League last season, the same number managed by Romelu Lukaku and Emmanuel Adebayor.
The 23-year-old would likely be first choice as left-forward for Spurs, assuming – somewhat safely – Nacer Chadli doesn’t keep scoring braces, and could work his way up to the top of the pecking order as Pochettino’s central striker.
His arrival would also increase the likelihood of the Lilywhites jettisoning at least one of their current attackers, something that will prick the ears of Southampton, who are reportedly chasing Andros Townsend.
The England winger scored from the penalty spot against AEL Limassol but doesn’t look a natural fit for Pochettino’s system, where the wide attackers are expected to bag 10+ goals a season.
If they secure Welbeck, Spurs could offer Townsend as a sweetener in a deal for Schneiderlin, a series of moves that would cap their summer off magnificently.
Spurs are 13/8 to make it five wins in a row this season at the weekend, although Liverpool will provide far sterner opposition than any side they’ve faced thus far.
