Arsenal v Tottenham: 5 of the best North London Derbies

In the words of legendary WWE commentator Jim Ross we have been treated to some right royal Slobberknockers when Arsenal and Tottenham have locked horns in recent years.

Once again the north London rivals go head-to-head this weekend with Arsene Wenger’s side the 4/5 favourites for victory, while Tottenham are 10/3 with the draw available at 13/5 with Ladbrokes.

But while we wait for the action to get underway at the Emirates, Oliver Yew takes a look back through the archives at five classic north London derbies!

Tottenham 2-2 Arsenal – White Hart Lane – 2004

Arsenal travelled to their north London rivals needing just a point to win the Premier League and Tottenham not only wanted to spoil the title celebrations but also become the first team to stop ‘The Invincibles’.

Goals from Patrick Vieira and Robert Pires gave the Gunners a 2-0 win but a Jamie Redknapp strike and a last-gasp Robbie Keane penalty levelled the scores.

But it was not enough to stop Arsenal’s title celebrations at White Hart Lane as they won the league at the ground for the second time.

Tottenham 4-5 Arsenal – White Hart Lane – 2004

Games between Tottenham and Arsenal during the early 90s were known as quite drab affairs but that all changed as we embarked on a new Millennium.

In 2004, we were treated to a carnival of football with nine goals and nine different goalscorers in an epic 5-4 win for the Gunners.

Arsenal 4-4 Tottenham – Emirates Stadium – 2008

Another north London Derby, another comeback and a worldie of a goal from Arsenal and Tottenham “legend” David Bentley!

Arsenal were once again in complete control at the Emirates at 4-2 up with only minutes left of normal time but a Jermaine Jenas goal in the dying seconds left the home fans feeling uncomfortable.

Their misery was complete when Aaron Lennon popped up in injury time to level the scores at 4-4 and seal a point for his side from absolutely nowhere!

Arsenal 2-3 Tottenham – Emirates Stadium – 2010

This time it was Arsenal’s turn to feel the wrath of a comeback as Spurs battled back from 2-0 down to claim their first win at the home of their arch-rivals in 17 years.

Goals from Samir Nasri and Marouane Chamakh put the Gunners in pole position but Gareth Bale, Rafael van der Vaart and Younes Kaboul completed the turnaround to send the visiting fans home with the bragging rights.

Arsenal 5-2 Tottenham – Emirates Stadium – 2012

Tottenham were full of confidence heading to the Emirates after picking up their first win away at Arsenal since 1993 just a year earlier.

And it got even better for Spurs and their travelling supporters as goals from Louis Saha and former Gunner Emmanuel Adebayor put the visitors into a 2-0 lead.

But that was as good as it got for Harry Redknapp’s side as Bacary Sagna and Robin van Persie levelled the scores.

After the interval it was all Arsenal once again as Tomas Rosicky and two goals from Theo Walcott completed the comeback and sealed all three points for the Gunners.
