Aston Villa set for deadline-day nail biter over Man Utd target

Published:

It’s a projected transfer deadline day move which may go all the way to the wire as Aston Villa try to sign unwanted Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley.

The two clubs have already shaken hands on an £8m transfer fee for the England man’s services but the deal hangs in the ether as Cleverley’s wage demands are preventing Villa from closing it out.

With a number of other interested parties including Everton monitoring the situation carefully, the player seems content to sit it out and see what offers end up coming his way during the final 24 hours of the window.

Paul Lambert and Roy Keane are hoping that a deal can still be brokered, although Cleverley reducing his pay demands will be crucial to that happening.

However, with Villa still the only club to have placed a firm offer on the table to this point, Cleverley is still favourite to join the Midlands outfit rather than stay at United where he appears to have slid out of Louis van Gaal’s plans.

Villa are 16/1 to be the Premier League team to make the last signing of deadline day and this looks like a move which could rumble for some hours to come.
