Liverpool looking to former Galactico to find scoring touch
Published:Having sold Luis Suarez to Barcelona in the summer then thrown the cash they received in the deal at a host of reinforcements, Liverpool always had a question mark over their ability to repeat their heroics from last season.
With Suarez leading the line the Reds finished as runners up to Manchester City in the Premier League, but without the Uruguayan goal getter sit 12th in the table through six games so far this term.
Mario Balotelli was the man Brendan Rodgers chose to replace Suarez with and, as yet, the Italian has failed to find the net in a Premier League match.
In fact, only one of the club’s seven top-flight goals have come from a striker and it seems their Northern Irish manager has already decided that more cavalry is required in January.
According to reports, Liverpool are looking to make a bid of over £30m for Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain when the transfer window reopens in the winter.
The former Real Madrid front man, who himself has endured a tough, goalless start to the Serie A campaign, has been a proven goalscorer for a number of seasons and is clearly sought after to provide a net-bulging boost to the Merseyside club.
Since the 2008/09 season, the 26-year-old has only tallied fewer than 16 goals in season once and proved his adaptability to playing in different leagues with a 17-strike haul in his first term in Naples.
The fact that Daniel Sturridge is currently out injured may be extenuating the problem for the Reds, but their odds of 21/20 to end the season in the top four would surely narrow should they manage to bring the Argentine to Anfield.
Rodgers’ next top-flight assignment comes in the form of West Brom, who he is 1/3 to beat at Anfield, and with the side already three points off the Champions League spots, it’s a win that’s sorely needed.
