Spurs’ Welbeck capture wholly dependent on departures first

Published:

A combination of two summer transfer windows has left Tottenham with a rather bloated look about their squad.

In fact, it’s so bloated that should Mauricio Pochettino wish to bring any more players to White Hart Lane, he’ll have to get rid of some of the current crop first.

Spurs have 27 senior players on their books, two more than the Premier League’s 25-man squad list allows, meaning loan or permanent deals need to be made before the likes of Danny Welbeck can arrive.

The Manchester United striker is a known target of the former Southampton boss, but with other Premier League clubs surely sniffing around the striking outcast, Pochettino will want to get any potential deal wrapped up sharpish.

The White Hart Lane futures of fringe players like Lewis Holtby, Sandro, Andros Townsend and Zeki Fryers are therefore quite endangered.

Spurs are 16/1 to sign the Premier League’s last player on transfer deadline day.
