Man City one of three clubs who should try and nab Gerrard

Published:

Even if last season ends up being the closest Steven Gerrard gets to a Premier League title, the Liverpool skipper will be regarded as an all-time great of the game when he finally retires.

Most assumed that would be at the Reds, but the midfielder has said he won’t retire after this year and could leave Anfield if not offered a new contract.

There’s clearly a few English clubs that it seems impossible the Liverpool talisman could join, but here’s three that would be wise to try and keep him in the Premier League.

Manchester City

The Citizens are currently reaping the benefits of taking Frank Lampard on loan this term, with the Chelsea icon recording four goals and four assists in seven all-competitions games this term.

Lampard has provided City with some much-needed backup for Yaya Toure, who has looked out of sorts this season, but will leave the Etihad in the summer.

Gerrard could take his place, adding a bucketload of experience and a homegrown player to Manuel Pellegrini’s squad, and the midfielder might even then land that elusive league winner’s medal.

City take on their local rivals Manchester United this weekend, a game they are 10/11 to win.

Tottenham Hotspur

Despite currently having at least 30 or 40 central midfielders on the books, Spurs don’t seem to have any in possession of some backbone, character or Premier League experience.

Gerrard would be a huge improvement to their squad in this regard, and he could hopefully teach the likes of Ryan Mason and Nabil Bentaleb similar qualities before they turn into someone like Paulinho instead.

Southampton

Many of the top clubs in the league are closed off to Gerrard due to long-standing rivalries, but if the Saints continue their current good form he could join them as they take on Europe next season.

St Mary’s is a breeding ground for young English talent, so who better to have around the club helping it develop than a man with 114 caps for the Three Lions?

Second-place Southampton are 21/20 to win at Hull this weekend.
