Ukip sound-a-like set to score for Varian in Hong Kong Cup

Published:

High-class flat racing action may have been put to bed on British and Irish shores for the winter, but there are some ultra-valuable renewals happening at Hong Kong’s Sha Tin track over the weekend.

Of course, no big equine event could pass unnoticed by the news.ladbrokes team. Here are our three best bets for the meeting.

Hong Kong Cup (8.30) – Farraaj @ 5/1

Since claiming a valuable handicap at Epsom the day before Australia’s Derby victory in June, this Dubai Destination gelding has impressed more than his bare form suggests.

After seeing off a decent field at York the following month, Farraaj was turned over at 5/4-favourite odds around the same track in August, but only by one-and-a-half lengths, and his close third in a Group 1 at Flemington last time out puts Roger Varian’s charge right in the mix here.

Hong Kong Sprint (6.40) – Sole Power @ 7/1

This will be Edward Lynam’s inmate’s third attempt at winning this valuable dash, having shown a fine turn of foot when finishing four-and-a-half lengths off first in ninth three years ago before finding favourite Lord Kanaloa too hot to handle last term.

Sole Power emerged victorious from three 5f sprints in a row between May and late August, with a Group 3 at Newmarket to his name during that streak, and a decent run over a furlong further in September suggests Richard Hughes’ mount has a live chance of taking this.

Hong Kong Vase (6.00) – Snow Sky @ 7/1

This Michael Stoute-trained three-year-old had smart Richard Hannon colt Windshear behind him in Glorious Goodwood’s Gordon Stakes at the end of July, and again when finishing three-and-a-half lengths off Kingston Hill in the Ladbrokes St Leger last time out.

Snow Sky receives 1lb from the rest of the field due to his tender years at Sha Tin, which could make all the difference in what looks likely to be an ultra tight Hong Kong Vase renewal.
