Kamara: Giving Liverpool ace a break spot-on from Rodgers

Do modern footballers receive unfair criticism when they complain of feeling fatigued and burnt out?

One player in the headlines recently for his supposed need for a little rest and relaxation has been Liverpool’s 20-year-old frontman, Raheem Sterling.

The exciting English talent returned from a mid-season break in Jamaica to score a brilliant equaliser against Chelsea in his side’s 1-1 draw in their Capital One Cup semi-final first leg.

And the decision to offer Sterling a little time out to recuperate has been praised by none other than our very own Chris Kamara.

He told Ladbrokes News: “Footballers get too much stick for saying they’re tired or feeling lethargic.

“In the past you’d get slaughtered for saying something like that.

“But the game has moved on. When I played you couldn’t sustain performances when the games were coming thick and fast and that led to inconsistency.

“Some days you went out on a football pitch and before you’d even kicked a ball you could hardly lift your legs up.”

In further support of his comments Kammy also pointed to the example set by a manager who was previously operating on the other side of Stanley Park.

“Did David Moyes play a young Wayne Rooney every week at Everton when he broke through? No he didn’t.

“Moysey effectively said ‘I know what I’m doing and if we keep playing Wayne we’ll destroy him’ and he was proved right.

“Look at the workload that’s been thrown on Raheem Sterling.

“At some stage he was going to hit a brick wall. He did and Brendan managed him perfectly by resting him and giving him a break. Let’s give him the credit he deserves.”

Sterling’s side host Bolton Wanderers in the FA Cup this weekend, a match set to be televised by BT Sport.

The hosts are 3/10 to defeat their Championship opponents with the draw 9/2 and a Trotters victory priced at 8/1 with Ladbrokes.
