Kamara: Aston Villa’s lack of January spending said an awful lot

Published:

Aston Villa’s lack of activity in the January transfer window spoke volumes about how those running the club perceive their current situation.

A whopping 10 points from safety at the foot of the table, many might have expected big signings before the deadline last Monday but it wasn’t to be.

You have to feel sorry for Remi Garde and you wonder what the situation was when they took him on board.

It seems to be that they brought him in on the proviso that if he could hint at some sort of revival before January, then funds would be available to continue that push to safety.

But the truth is, there haven’t been any sparks of life in Villa and the results haven’t improved under Garde’s tutorage.

When a club are down on form like they were, it can be extremely difficult to halt that slide.

It now looks like the board have resigned themselves to being relegated and decided that they can’t afford to spend any money, they’ll make do with what they have got and hope they can bounce straight back.

Obviously that is a risky way to look at things with the Championship notoriously difficult to get out of but in truth, there didn’t look to be any signs that they would stay up.

The stats were against them, nobody in that position come January has been able to muster enough results to get themselves out of it before.

It’s not like when Leicester were at the bottom last year. The Foxes were playing well, they were just unlucky not to be getting results.

Their luck turned in their favour, and history obviously shows that they got out of their slump.

But the thing with Villa is, they aren’t playing well. They don’t look like a team that are scrapping for every point and playing for one another to get out of it.

They just look like a team that have lost their way.

It’s obviously a nightmare for the fans and you have to feel for them, but it is what it is now, and it looks as if those at the club are just doing their best to prepare for next season now.
