Tottenham could battle Arsenal for Kiwi defender this January

| 15.01.2015

Tottenham may have just declared war on Arsenal in the battle to sign highly-rated West Ham United defender Winston Reid this month but it’s the Gunners who still lead the way when it comes to signing the New Zealand international, according to Ladbrokes.

The bookmaker has Arsene Wenger’s team as the 5/1 favourites to sign the much-sought after 26-year-old, who is in the final months of his contract at Upton Park.

Arsenal remain the front-runners despite fresh reports claiming Tottenham have now entered the race to recruit the stopper this month.

Several news outlets claim Spurs are set to offer the defender a £60,000-a-week contract in a bid to lure him to the club this summer, though West Ham could yet be tempted to allow Reid to leave the club this January, provided an adequate transfer fee can be negotiated.

Tottenham have some experience in this respect, having previously purchased Lewis Holtby from Schalke in January 2013, despite having already agreed a deal to bring the player to White Hart Lane the following summer following the expiration of his contract with the Gelsenkirchen club.

The Lilywhites face plenty in the way of competition for the Hammers star though with Manchester United and Liverpool both in the hunt for the 26-year-old.

The Red Devils are in desperate need of defensive reinforcements following an injury-plagued season and Ladbrokes has the Old Trafford club at 7/1 to sign Reid this January.

Liverpool, meanwhile, could be tempted into a mid-season move for the defender after seeing summer signing Dejan Lovren struggle for form since his big-money summer move from Southampton.

The Merseysiders remain outsiders in the bookmaker’s market though at 12/1 though more developments are expected in the race to sign Reid over the next couple of weeks.

Southampton are also priced at 16/1 to sign the New Zealander this month with Everton also a distant 20/1.
