10 games without a win, on top of a criminal lack of goals throughout his tenure, was enough to end Paul Lambert’s reign as Aston Villa manager.
With the club sat in 18th in the Premier League, with a 6/4 chance of going down according to Ladbrokes, the list of candidates to replace the former Champions League winner is understandably sparse.
Only 16 names grace the betting market to take over from the Scot, which is a sad indictment of the current state of the club.
While the purpose of Alan Curbishley and Stan Collymore’s presence in the list feels like one of padding there are some managers with a genuine chance of landing the gig.
We’ve taken those chances, along with their suitability to the club, into account when handing out the below grades:
In a short period as Spurs boss, Sherwood not only showed himself to play an exciting brand of football, but proved he can win matches while doing. At such a worrying stage of existence for Villa, that should be all the convincing they need to hire him.

Klinsmann’s position as USA manager pushes him towards the surface of the betting market, as Villa have an American owner.
However, the former Spurs striker would be mad to leave that role for Villa and his one-stint as a club manager ended with zero silverware despite it being with Bayern Munich. It is best for both parties if this one is avoided.
