How close is Liverpool’s vice captain to emulating Gerrard?

| 05.03.2015

Jordan Henderson’s growing stature at Liverpool and recently-acquired penchant for scoring screamers led BBC pundit Phil Neville to make comparisons between the vice skipper and his captain Steven Gerrard after the Reds’ 2-0 win over Burnley.

The boy from Sunderland has certainly come a long way since his early Anfield days which invited widespread criticism after Kenny Dalglish had forked out an eye-brow raising fee for the then 20-year-old in 2011.

However, his importance to Liverpool’s cause and ability are no longer subjects of debate, rather high praise instead.

Henderson’s blossoming last season has been backed up with another fine campaign in 2014/15.

At 24, the England regular is now seen as the poster boy of the forthcoming post-Gerrard era at Liverpool, and having been installed as vice-captain there’s every chance he’ll assume the big man’s armband.

Looking at the below graphic, P.Nev shouldn’t have been so coy about his comparison between the two centre-midfielders based on the stats.

If Henderson continues to fire in goals like this one in a red shirt, then Gerrard’s legacy really is in good hands.
