Europa League draw reaction: Wolfsburg have to do it the hard way

Published:

Once considered among the favourites to win the Europa League, Wolfsburg and Sevilla are facing up to arguably the toughest opponents imaginable in the quarter-finals.

The Bundesliga side showed their class in dispatching Inter Milan with a 5-2 aggregate win in the previous round, but they will have to do it all again in the last-eight with Napoli lying in wait.

Rafa Benitez has won this competition on two separate occasions as manager of Valencia and later Chelsea and the Partenopei made light work of Dinamo Moscow over two legs.

With the second leg due to be played in the ever-intimidating atmosphere of the Stadio San Paolo too, the Wolves will need to be at their very best to progress.

The same goes for holders Sevilla, who may boast a dominant record in this competition but are facing the sole Champions League survivor in Zenit St Petersburg.

Unai Emery’s side may have made light work of Villarreal in the last-16 but Zenit’s expensively-assembled side are likely to provide a much sterner test.

With the second leg due to be played in Russia too, Sevilla will need the likes of Kevin Gameiro and Carlos Bacca to be firing on all cylinders from the off.

Everton’s conquerors, Dynamo Kyiv, face Fiorentina but the Viola will fancy their chances against a side that leaked four goals over two legs against the Toffees.

The Florence club upset the odds to knockout Roma in the last round and having recently beaten Juventus in the Coppa Italia, they look the best bet to progress.

Meanwhile Dnipro have been rewarded for their extra-time exploits against Ajax with a tie against surprise package Club Brugge.

The Belgian side shocked Besiktas with three late goals in Istanbul but could come unstuck against the Ukrainian side and star player Yevhen Konoplyanka, who could be in line for a Premier League move this summer.
