‘Arise Sir AP’ the best of Ladbrokes’ McCoy retirement specials

After failing to win a second Grand National aboard favourite Shutthefrontdoor at Aintree over the weekend, jockey AP McCoy isn’t going anywhere for a couple of weeks, but Ladbrokes.com have stolen a march on the competition by pricing up a range of markets ahead of his impending retirement.
The greatest jumps jockey the world has ever produced is unlikely to take over coaching responsibilities at his beloved Arsenal when Arsene Wenger finally leaves north London, priced up at 1000/1, but at the other end of the odds spectrum, 1/4 seems fair that he’ll pick up this year’s BBC Sports Personality Lifetime Achievement award.
However, the best bet on offer looks to be the 2/1 dangled by Ladbrokes about McCoy being knighted on or before the day the 2016 New Year’s honours list is announced.
The likes of golfer Nick Faldo, cyclists Chris Hoy and Bradley Wiggins, and middle-distance runner Kelly Holmes have all received either knighthoods or damehoods over the last decade.
None of them have been anywhere near as dominant in their sports over such a sustained period of time as McCoy, who will claim his 20th consecutive National Hunt champion jockey title this season.
Furthermore, National Hunt racing has been underrepresented in honours lists for some time, largely due to the sport’s predominantly Irish personnel, but Kerry-born BBC commentator Peter O’Sullevan was knighted in 1997, so Ulster native McCoy looks a fine bet to receive the same trinket before the year is out.
Of Ladbrokes’ other McCoy offers, 33/1 about the 40-year-old having an Amazon number one bestseller in 2015 must be a better bet than his autobiography topping the Xmas charts at the same price, as the latter would surely result in the former.
Whether or not he’ll end up on this year’s ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ is anyone’s guess at 16/1, while McCoy receiving both the RTE and BBC SPOTY awards in 2015 looks priced about right at 25/1.
