Celtic star first man on Bournemouth’s Premier League shopping list

| 03.05.2015

AFC Bournemouth have already started to shop around for next year, with Celtic star Charlie Mulgrew that latest player linked with a move to Dean Court.

Barring a 20-goal swing this weekend the Cherries will be in the top flight for the first time in the south coast club’s history and Mulgrew has been identified as a man with the potential to keep Eddie Howe’s side up, according to The Times.

Bournemouth have a relatively young side and, bar the odd game, the team completely bereft of top flight experience.

Mulgrew’s previous exploits in England – stints with Wolves and Southend – are not much to write home about but his solid performances for Celtic and Aberdeen north of the border are said to have impressed Howe enough to consider a move.

A defender by trade but also able to operate in the base of the midfield, Scotland international Mulgrew has been injured since December but is returning to full fitness just in time for the summer.

Promotion will give Bournemouth plenty of financial muscle to build a team capable of staying up and while the permanent signing of goalkeeper Artur Boruc from rivals Southampton is at the top of Howe’s list of priorities, amassing top flight experience is also a must.

Mulgrew is expected to meet up with the Scotland squad for their upcoming Euro 2016 qualifier against the Republic of Ireland next month.

Howe is likely to take in the match and proof of the 29-year-old’s fitness could persuade the Cherries manager to make a bid.

Mulgrew is out of contract at the end of next season and the Bhoys could be tempted to cash in now rather than see him walk away for free next year.

Bournemouth are 4/6 to stay up with Ladbrokes at present and it could pay to take that price now as those odds could disappear with a few canny signings of Mulgrew’s ilk.
