Poll: Where does Depay rate amongst Man Utd’s Eredivisie imports?
Published:
Louis van Gaal has set his intentions clear by making the first major move in the transfer market this summer by sealing the deal to bring PSV’s Memphis Depay to Old Trafford.
The Dutchman will be hoping his fellow countryman will be the catalyst needed for the Red Devils to really push on with a title challenge in 2015-16.
But Depay isn’t the first big name signing to arrive at Old Trafford directly from the Eredivisie.
He’s got competition if he is to be crowned best Dutch import at the Theatre of Dreams, so we are asking you how he fares with some other United legends.
Today’s poll is simple, who is Manchester United’s best signing from Holland’s top flight?
Memphis Depay
He obviously hasnt had a chance to prove his worth yet for LVG’s men, but he certainly arrives with high expectations.
He was the top scorer in the league for his Eindhoven employers, despite playing in a deeper role for the Rood-witten, netting 21 times.
A solid showing for the Oranje at the World Cup shows he can cut it at the very top level, and big things are sure to come.
Ruud van Nistelrooy
Van Nistelrooy arrived in the Premier League for a British transfer record of £18.5m, and it proved to be money well spent.
In 219 games, he netted 150 times under Sir Alex Ferguson, breaking countless records along the way.
One Premier League, an FA Cup and a League Cup triumph probably understate the impact Ruud had in his five years at the club.
Jaap Stam
Jaap Stam’s spell at Old Trafford was far more fruitful, winning the Premier League in every season in their back-line, one FA Cup and the Champions League.
He made just 80 appearances for United so may not qualify for this gong, but his presence in the centre of defence cannot be denied.
Not a man to usually admit mistakes, Alex Ferguson even held his hands up saying that he had got it wrong in his decision to sell Stam to Lazio 2001.
Park Ji Sung
At just £4m, Park is probably the best value of this bunch after arriving from PSV in 2005.
The South Korean spent seven years in the North West, and although he wasn’t a first time regular, his first year aside, the consistent performances he put in are remembered fondly amongst the United faithful.
Daley Blind
One of the first LVG signings since his arrival and Manchester United, Blind has been responsible for sparing the side’s blushes a couple of times in his debut season.
Late equalisers against West Ham and West Brom have secured two points that could well be vital in United’s quest for that runners-up spot.
He’s been a consistent performer in 2014-15, and there could be plenty more to come.
