Poll Reaction: Eto’o exit was Real Madrid’s biggest mistake
Real Madrid should never have allowed Samuel Eto’o to leave the club so early in his career, according to the latest Ladbrokes News poll.
After former Madrid man Alvaro Morata dashed the Bernabeu club’s hopes of reaching a first El Clasico Champions League final last night we asked you to vote on which player’s Madrid exit has hurt them the most.
Morato’s winning goal for Juventus may be fresh in the memory but it is a player who wore the white of Madrid only briefly and many years ago who tops the poll with Samuel Eto’o claiming 40 per cent of the overall vote.
Next in the voting was Claude Makelele with 22 per cent and while he formed part of the Champions League winning side of 2002 and is fondly remembered there has been a Makelele-shaped hole in the Madrid midfield since his departure for Chelsea.
Completing the top three with 15 per cent of the votes is Wesley Sneijder. The Dutchman was sold at a considerable loss to Inter Milan despite a solid start to his Real career and a haul of nine major trophies with the Serie A giants and Galatasaray since has highlighted what the Madrid fans could have had.
Clarence Seedorf was voted in fourth place with just 13 per cent of the total and this is somewhat surprising, with the Dutchman adding two Serie A titles and two Champions League wins to the silverware he won at Real before falling out with then-manager Guus Hiddink.
And finally, completing the vote with just one in 10 was Morata. He may have put paid to Real’s chances of winning an 11th European title for this year but he’ll have to win a few himself before Madrid fans start to hate him properly.
