Southend v Wycombe: Meet the League 2 Play-Off Final Goalscorers

Published:

Southend United take on Wycombe Wanderers in this year’s League Two play-off final and while we can’t wait for kick-off, we’re struggling to pick a winner.

However, that doesn’t mean we’re shirking this particular challenge.

We’re just looking for value beyond the 6/4 for Southend to win the game and the 9/5 about a Wycombe victory in 90 minutes.

Why? The fact is these two teams are highly likely to cancel each out.

Phil Brown’s Shrimpers kept eight clean sheets in their final nine games of the regular season while Gareth Ainsworth’s Blues recorded shutouts in only three of their final 19 outings.

The latter saw his side hammer their 10-man visitors 4-1 in December with Southend dominating the return fixture before having to settle for a 2-2 draw.

Ergo, something’s got to give and while backing both teams to score at 20/21 offers some value we think we can do better than that.

Two names immediately stand out for us – Barry Corr and Paul Hayes.

Tell a lie, we’ll add Chairboys defender Alfie Mawson and the Shrimpers’ Jack Payne into the mix too.

Corr has netted 15 goals in all competitions this term, including a brace against Wycombe at Roots Hall, making him a standout 5/1 to net first and 9/5 to bag at any time.

Meanwhile, Paul Hayes has rediscovered his shooting boots recently, netting in both legs of his team’s play-off final semi-final against Plymouth.

The former Scunthorpe frontman is available at 6/1 to score first and 5/2 anytime.

But for those looking for something at a price, Brentford loanee Mawson is difficult to ignore.

The 20-year-old has scored six times since the start of March and is an enticing prospect at 20/1 to open the floodgates at Wembley.

And finally, keep an eye out for Southend midfielder Payne, an exciting youngster for the Essex side.

He struck his side’s consolation in defeat to Wycombe earlier in the campaign, one of six goals so far this season.

At 9/2 to get on the scoresheet he’s bound to attract plenty of attention.
